Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a collaborative approach to communication that guides individuals towards behavior change. It involves using specific skills and techniques to help people explore and articulate their thoughts and motivations for change. MI is highly effective in various professional fields, including health care, education, social work, counseling, and addiction treatment.

What To Know

MI is suitable for professionals who engage in conversations about behavior or lifestyle change with their clients or patients. High-quality MI training is essential for professionals to effectively learn and apply the skills associated with MI. Research conducted by Dr. Bill Miller in addiction treatment has demonstrated the effectiveness of MI in guiding individuals towards positive behavior change. MI has been shown to improve outcomes in various behavioral domains by helping individuals resolve ambivalence and increase motivation for change.

What To Expect

Expect MI to provide a structured yet collaborative framework for engaging individuals in discussions about behavior change. Professionals trained in MI will use specific techniques to facilitate dialogue, explore ambivalence, and enhance motivation for change. MI can lead to improved outcomes across different fields, including counseling, health care, education, health coaching, and business, by empowering individuals to take meaningful steps towards their goals.
