About the Training

What to know:

This is an advanced EMDR training for therapists already trained in EMDR.   Having some basics on Motivational Interviewing is helpful, but not required.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a practical, evidence-based collaborative conversation style supporting patient treatment engagement and reducing reluctance around behavior change.  This interactive workshop will introduce participants to the skills, strategies, and processes of MI, and its application with EMDR. Participants will learn how MI can compliment and enhance EMDR treatment, with specific focus on 8 phases and 3 prongs to support clients throughout the EMDR process. By implementing MI processes (engaging, focusing, evoking, planning), a clinician can support a client in engaging them when they’re anxious about addressing their trauma.  MI can help EMDR clinicians enhance client willingness around their goals (i.e. reducing substance use), strengthen motivation when challenges arise, sustain change after an EMDR session, and tailor treatment to the patient’s needs.  Finally, the workshop will differentiate between a 'top down' vs. 'bottom up' approach to reprocessing using EMDR and review additional resources to support individuals with complex PTSD.

As a result of these sessions, you will be able to:

Learning Objectives:

· Explore and analyze various Motivational Interviewing strategies and tools specifically applicable to EMDR for addressing ambivalence and behavior change in complex presentations.

· Identify key principles of Motivational Interviewing that can be effectively integrated with EMDR techniques to enhance client engagement and motivation.

· Explore and synthesize the application of both EMDR and Motivational Interviewing techniques in the context of treating clients with substance use disorders, focusing on enhancing motivation, addressing ambivalence and facilitating trauma resolution.

· Develop a comprehensive treatment framework that combines EMDR and Motivational Interviewing strategies to effectively address the complex interplay between substance use, trauma and behavior change.

· Compare and contrast the top-down and bottom-up therapeutic approaches in the context of addressing complex presentation, considering their theoretical foundations, mechanisms of action and potential outcomes.

· Develop an in-depth understanding of the Processing Continuum model and its relevance in facilitating client affect regulation and containment within their window of tolerance during EMDR processing.

· Explore case studies and clinical scenarios to effectively apply the Processing Continuum model in real-world settings, adapting strategies to varying degrees of client distress and arousal.

· Engage in practical exercises using the integration worksheets to stimulate therapeutic scenarios, gaining hands-on experience in applying the combined techniques while addressing the unique challenges of complex presentations.

· Acquire advanced skills in preparing clients with complex presentations for EMDR therapy, including development of resource states, emotional regulation techniques and stabilization strategies.

· Integrate somatic experiencing principles and practices within the context of EMDR therapy for complex presentations, focusing on enhancing body awareness, trauma processing and emotional release.

· Engage in a self-reflective process to explore and work on a personal area of change and growth, employing principles and techniques derived from therapeutic approaches presented during the workshop.

· Apply the process of self-exploration to gain insights into the challenges and dynamics of personal change, fostering empathy and understanding towards clients’ change process.

· Participants will receive 12 CE's approved by EMDRIA for this workshop (included in the price).
